Politics in the Village of Mariemont, OH

Need to track down contact info for Council Member Kim Sullivan and
Council Member Melissa Schmit

Coming soon. Interesting:
Mariemont is distinguished from similar communities by a unique electoral process called Town Meeting. Town Meeting is a unique nonpartisan system through which nominations for Village offices are made. To be a part of Town Meeting, you need only be a resident of voting age. Complete with the colorful and historically dressed Town Crier, Mariemont Town Meeting has meetings whenever appropriate, including a “state of the Village” meeting annually. The Village offices include Mayor, Treasurer, Clerk, and six Council persons – one representative from each District of the Village. Though candidates have run independently of Mariemont Town Meeting, overall this system has proved well-suited to the needs of our Village.

Mariemont Town Meeting is a non-partisan, not-for-profit political action committee or PAC, established around the time the Village was incorporated in 1941.

The purpose of Town Meeting is to support the village’s citizens and government by facilitating a mechanism through which candidates for elected municipal offices are identified, introduced to voters, and nominated for election. Town Meeting is usually held in early March.

The Town Meeting forum and nomination process is a valued and time-tested aspect of Mariemont’s political tradition. Town Meeting anticipates, but does not replace or duplicate, the Ohio municipal election process for the village. Candidates for elected office are permitted to run – and have run in several past elections – without being the Town Meeting nominee.

For more information, contact Pete McBride, Vice Chair, Town Meeting 513-527-4185 / pmcbride@fuse.net , or Todd Keyes, Chairman at 513-271-4464 / tnjkeyes@cinci.rr.com

Politics in the City of Wyoming, OH

Wyoming is “One Big Neighborhood” and a finalist in the 2010 All America City competition of the National Civic League with superb schools, a historic tradition back to 1806, and a pride in our thousands of volunteers. Politically it is about 30% Dem, 30% Rep, and 40% independent. It has the highest per capita level of grad and professional degrees among Ohio cities, so if you canvass voters in Wyoming, please bring fact sheets and brief the canvassers carefully to respond adequately to well informed questions.

Of its 8,200 people, about 4,800 are registered to vote and the 2008 turnout averaged about 82%, after a massive Obama and local team effort. The 2004 deficit (Bush won by 250) was more than made up in 2008 (up 500), so a swing of 750 net votes on a relatively small base was phenomenal. It has Victorian-era National Historic Register homes near the railroad, pleasant 1960-70′s ranch homes on the “hilltop”, and a remarkable variety of custom homes built into tree-filled lots with contemporary charm. Wyoming is in the 28th Ohio House (Pillich) and 1st Congressional (Driehaus) districts.

Vice Mayor Jim O’Reilly (761-9398) leads the Wyoming Dems, and about 30 core participants make up the Club’s active group while many others are generally supportive. Council has 7 members, elected in odd numbered years, who run nonpartisan campaigns. The city council hears from 8 appointed select commissions. About 60 community organizations, churches and civic groups give volunteer hours for many projects. Generally new residents who wish to be volunteers apply for a commission vacancy and move into roles of leadership after substantial volunteer effort.

When visiting homes in Wyoming, the best advice is “over-prepare”, read the lit, bring the fact sheets, check your candidate’s web site, know the key issues. The person who answers the door may be a world class environmental scientist, a longtime hospital manager, a pediatric surgeon or the author of nationally regarded textbooks. You will have some polite but pressing responses, with thoughtful and intelligent comments, so do not walk around under-equipped for this level of voter awareness.
